We collect underutilized books and knowledge from the West and transform them into vital educational assets for African communities — giving every book a second life, and every child a better future.
IDEAf is a Canadian non-profit organization that transforms the surplus of underutilized books and knowledge in the Western world into a powerful educational force across Africa. We believe that what sits idle on a shelf in one country can ignite a lifelong love of learning in another.
Operating from Canada with regional offices in Rwanda, DR Congo, Uganda, and Kenya, we work at the intersection of resourcefulness and impact — making every donated book count.
We proactively identify and collect new and gently used physical books — and secure digital rights — from individuals, schools, libraries, and publishers across Western countries. These resources are then distributed equitably to African schools and communities with the greatest need. Donors can contribute $10 to cover shipping, directly linking a small gift to a book's new life.
Books need a home. We develop and support the establishment of libraries, reading rooms, and online learning portals in African schools and communities. These spaces amplify the impact of every donated resource, creating lasting environments where students and educators can thrive. We partner with foundations, corporations, and high-net-worth individuals who see the power of enabling environments.
Knowledge is most powerful when shared person-to-person. Through programs like "Vacation for Hope" and "Sabbatical for Change and Impact," we facilitate peer-to-peer learning, library management training, and reading culture programs — equipping local educators with the skills to maximize every resource available to them.
Books alone aren't enough — they need a home. IDEAf builds and supports the physical and digital spaces that transform donated resources into lasting educational ecosystems across Africa.
We design and establish community libraries in schools and public spaces — purpose-built to house donated books and serve as permanent hubs of learning for students, teachers, and families.
Where full libraries aren't yet feasible, we create dedicated reading rooms within existing school buildings — quiet, resourced spaces where children can develop a love of reading and self-directed learning.
We establish online learning platforms and computer access points, bringing digital educational content — including e-books and curriculum resources — to communities with limited connectivity.
Digital infrastructure is only as good as the power and internet behind it. We work with partners to provide solar power solutions and internet access to support our digital learning portals.
We build regional logistics hubs for receiving, cataloguing, and distributing donated books — ensuring an efficient and equitable pipeline from donor to student across Rwanda, DRC, Uganda, and Kenya.
We partner with local education authorities, NGOs, corporations, and international foundations to co-fund infrastructure — maximizing impact through in-kind donations of materials, expertise, and long-term investment.
Our infrastructure model is designed for longevity. Every library, reading room, and digital portal is built with the community — not just for it — ensuring that local stakeholders maintain, grow, and own the spaces long after IDEAf's initial investment. We pair every infrastructure project with Skills Exchange programming so local educators and librarians are equipped to maximize every resource available.
From our headquarters in Canada, IDEAf maintains active regional operations across East and Central Africa — building partnerships with local authorities, schools, and community organizations who know their communities best.
Individuals, schools, libraries, and publishers donate gently used books or contribute $10 to cover shipping for one book.
IDEAf collects, sorts, and prepares books for distribution — ensuring quality and matching materials to community needs.
Books travel from Western countries to our regional partners in Rwanda, DR Congo, Uganda, and Kenya.
Local educators and students receive resources in purpose-built libraries and reading rooms, fueling learning for years.
Every contribution — a donated book, a $10 shipping gift, or a major grant — moves us closer to a world where every African child has the resources to reach their full potential. Your surplus is their opportunity.
IDEAf is a registered Canadian non-profit. All donations are eligible for Canadian tax receipts.
IDEAf's Skills Donation programs connect passionate educators, librarians, and professionals with African communities who benefit from direct knowledge transfer. Whether for a vacation or a sabbatical, your expertise creates lasting change.
